member spotlight: hoops for youth
Since its founding in September 1999, the Hoops For Youth Foundation (HFYF) has remained rooted in a simple truth: while basketball is the heart of what we do, our purpose reaches far beyond the court.
We were created out of a desire to give young people—especially those growing up in challenging environments—a real opportunity to thrive. Over the past two decades, we’ve grown into a comprehensive support system that uses the power of sports, mentorship, and community investment to equip kids with the tools they need to succeed in every area of life.
Basketball serves as the entry point—but what happens beyond the game is where the real transformation takes place. Through partnerships with schools, youth organizations, local leaders, and families, we’re able to provide life-changing resources—from school supplies and safe spaces to emotional support, court renovations, coaching clinics, scholarships, and more.

Mission & Story
Why We Exist
In too many neighborhoods across our nation—and especially here in Washington, D.C.—kids are growing up surrounded by circumstances they didn’t choose and shouldn’t have to navigate alone. Poverty, violence, broken homes, underfunded schools, and lack of support systems often leave them with limited options and even fewer safe places to turn.
At the Hoops For Youth Foundation, we exist to change that reality. We don’t just offer a game—we offer hope, opportunity, and a community that cares.
We believe that every child deserves a fair shot at success, no matter where they come from or what challenges they face. Our work is about removing the barriers that stand in the way and replacing them with tangible tools, meaningful relationships, and empowering life experiences.
Here’s what we provide:
· A Safe Haven For many of the kids we support, home is not always a safe or stable environment. Whether due to violence, neglect, or generational hardship, too many children grow up without consistent support. We offer an alternative—a place where they are seen, valued, and safe, whether it’s on the basketball court, in a mentoring session, or during one of our family support events.
· The Basic Tools to Play and Grow Something as simple as a new pair of shoes, a uniform, or access to a basketball court can make the difference between a child sitting on the sidelines or being part of
something bigger than themselves. We provide sports equipment, food, clothing, and school supplies—the essentials that open doors and build self-worth.
· Access to Mentors and Role Models Every child needs someone who believes in them. Our volunteers, coaches, and community partners are more than instructors—they’re positive influences who offer stability, encouragement, and guidance. These relationships often become the turning point in a young person’s life, showing them what’s possible and walking with them as they chase it.
· A Proactive Approach to Life Skills We don’t wait for problems to become crises. Through basketball and structured programming, we actively teach respect, discipline, leadership, accountability, and confidence—skills that can shape lives and uplift families. What they learn in practice becomes what they apply in school, at home, and eventually in the workforce.
· A Bridge to Education, Leadership, and Community Empowerment Hoops For Youth doesn’t stop at the baseline. We provide scholarship opportunities, leadership development programs, civic engagement events, and partnerships with educators and nonprofits to help young people expand their horizons and find their voice. We connect them not only to resources—but to possibilities.
“Success isn’t just for the well-to-do. It’s for anyone willing to work for it. We just make sure they get the chance.”
We exist because too many children are being left behind—and that is simply unacceptable. We believe the future is brighter when we invest in our youth, when we give them the chance to see beyond their current reality and imagine something better. And we walk with them, one step at a time, to help make that vision real.
Because when kids are given support, love, and opportunity, they rise. They lead. They give back. And in doing so, they transform their communities for generations to come.
